Entering Events and Championships

I’m going to do this backwards, in that I am going to cover championships first.

What is a championship?

A championship is a set of named Hillclimbs and Sprints events, usually between 15 and 30 events, of which your best seven or nine (depending on the championship) count towards your overall Championship score.

As an example: The Welsh Sprint and Hillclimb Championship has a total of 27 events (usually about half sprints and half Hillclimbs); the scoring is on the best nine event finished. In reality most competitors would do twelve or more events to get the best nine.

The championship calendar is published in December or January of any given year. It cannot be published before this time as the championship needs to be ratified by Motorsport UK; this is a long and painful process.

Events

Events are Sprints or Hillclimbs. Sprints are usually on a race circuit where competitors usually complete one and three quarter laps against the clock.

Hill climbs are similar but uphill timed from the start to the finish.

In any given event you will usually receive around four runs.

These events are organized by various clubs across the UK, and are probably nothing to do with your own Motor Club.

Events are advertised at the discretion of the organizing club; entries are also at the discretion of the organizing club, so your club will not have any influence or control over who gets an entry.

It is often useful to look at championship calendars to find out when and where events will take place in your area. Some events are very popular and can fill within 20 minutes of the event entry time/date.

It is your responsibility as a competitor to find out when and where events are taking place.

Clubs will often post event entry dates / times on websites or bulletin boards but they have no responsibility to do so.

You must find the event you wish to do.

You must enter the events you wish to do.

This can be challenging in your first season of Hillclimb and Sprint but after that you will understand which events you will need to enter very quickly on which ones fill more slowly. Some organisers will reply to your entry with a confirmation within a week of you entering; others may not respond until two weeks before the event

This is the way of the Hillclimb and Sprint world.

Be safe!
